The book was badly received by critics, selling poorly. Greene repudiated the book along with his 3rd Novel (Rumour at Nightfall) and it has been out of print since, being the only UK edition. Greene was quoted saying; "I was trying to write my first political novel, knowing nothing of politics". Supposedly only 2000 copies sold. First state jacket with the 7/6 price and review for The Man Within on the back. About a near fine book, square with bright navy boards and clear gold lettering on teh spine. Some foxing on edges and internally some foxing on first few and last few pages. Includes the scarce first state jacket. Browning of the spine, some chipping in particular top and bottom of spine and jacket folds. Bottom of spine has some vertical loses. Now with a brodart jacket.
