Mendelssohn remarks how the author died (1887) before he could see his work go to print and that he had requested the historian George McCall Theal complete it – Theal was unable at the time, but with a grant from the Colonial Government volume 1 (A-J) was published in 1893. Theal subsequently received and discovered additional information, leading to the publication of a second volume, a "corrected and enlarged edition of the first part, extending it to the letter O".
