Birmingham: The Birmingham Science Fiction Group, 1987. A limited souvenir book from Novacon 17 in 1987, Banks attended as a guest of honour. One of the harder to find Iain M Banks Collectibles. Original yellow wrappers, this copy #453 of 500 copies, signed by Banks on the title page. Later included in State of the Art, Banks's collection of short stories first published in 1989. "An alien race discovers that a faulty teleporter has been sending junk onto the surface of Earth instead of the Sun, where scientists from across the world have been studying these "Gifts." The aliens covertly work with national authorities to recover the futuristic technologies. The last Gift to arrive is the malfunctioning teleporter itself, which the United States attempts to use for a first strike against the USSR. The teleporter fails and randomly sends nuclear devices across the world, devastating several nations." VG+ or better copy some minor wear to wrappers, faint outline of an old fold on the bottom back cover, internally clean, kept in an acid-free sleeve. Item #29626
