Thornton was also deeply interested in political questions and dedicated The Politician's Creed to examining the qualities of good government, with sections dedicated to commerce, treaties, war, taxes, agriculture, and poverty. Sections of this work was published in 1795-6 in two volumes, with this edition in three volumes in 1799. A rare publication. Provenance: Jay Gould (1836-1892), American railroad magnate (bookplate, library shelf label); R. Manthorp (early ownership signatures on title-pages). Some rubbing to boards, front part of vol 1 loose, clean internally 213 by 127mm (8½ by 5 inches). Item #31299
