1712. 'A New Map of the North Part of Antient Africa Shewing the Chief People, Cities, Towns, Rivers, Mountains &c... Dedicated to his Highness William Duke of Gloucester.' A splendid but unusual map of northern Africa, known to the ancients, is in outline colour. The map is divided in two by a large title cartouche supported by two people. The left half of the map has North on the left and the right half, with north on top, shows the possible routes of the Nile River. The map was engraved by R Spossorth in 1700 for William Wells. This the Oxford scholar included the map in a 'A new sett (sic) of maps both of antient and present geography' for the education of his young pupil William, Duke of Gloucester, the son of Queen Anne and George, Prince of Denmark.
