Melpomene is the Greek Muse of tragedy, recognized as one of the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne. Originally associated with singing and musical harmony, she evolved into the patron of tragic theater, often depicted holding a tragic mask, a dagger, or wearing high cothurnus boots. She is sometimes cited as the mother of the Sirens. Juri Jakovenko (born 1965) is a renowned Belarusian graphic artist and engraver, internationally recognized for his technical printmaking and his fantastical, surreal imagery. Based in Grodno, Belarus, Jakovenko has established himself as a master of the etching needle, creating dense, narrative-rich compositions that often blend medieval aesthetics with modern surrealism. His work is highly prized by collectors of fine prints and Ex-Libris (bookplates) for its incredible attention to detail, mythical storytelling, and atmospheric depth. Item #31987
