1677. This is the first state of Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi's 1677 map of Africa, based on the 1668 map by Guillaume Sanson. Rossi substituted Sanson's French text for Italian and did not materially change the geography. Engraved by Giorgio Widman who signed the map at the bottom left. Issued in Il Mercurio geografico, by Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola (1643-1695), who was active in Modena in Italy. This map is uncommonly available in the market. The map (40cm x 54cm) is in outline colour as issued and is in fine condition. Left margin, where the map was inserted into the book is somewhat crenulated and margin a bit dirty as I expected.
