Namaqua Hottentots from Tachard
1747. This plate was published in "A New General Collection of Voyages and Travels" (commonly known as Astley's Voyages), printed for Thomas Astley in London between 1745 and 1747. The caption "from Tachard" refers to Guy Tachard, a French Jesuit missionary and mathematician who traveled to Siam via the Cape of Good Hope in the 1680s. The imagery in Astley's collection was often re-engraved based on these earlier eyewitness accounts. Copperplate engraving on laid paper. 215 by 150mm (8½ by 6 inches). Item #32204
