Genista juncea (Spanish Broom)
1800 - 1819. This print originates from Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau's "Traité des arbres et arbustes que l'on cultive en France en pleine terre" (Treatise on Trees and Shrubs Cultivated in France), specifically the expanded second edition often called the "Nouveau Duhamel.", published in Paris between 1800 - 1819. Pierre-Joseph Redoute was a Austrian Netherlands painter and botanist known for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers, many published as large coloured stipple engravings. Nicknamed the "Raphael of Flowers" and has been called the greatest botanical illustrator of all time. Redouté was an official court artist of Marie Antoinette, and continued painting through the French Revolution and Reign of Terror. After Queen Marie-Antoinette, his patrons included both of Napoleon's wives – Empress Joséphine and Marie Louise, Duchess of Parma – as well as Maria Amalia of Naples and Sicily, wife of Louis Philippe I, the last king of France. Modern Scientific Name is Spartium junceum. Spartium junceum, known as Spanish broom, rush broom, or weaver's broom, it is a species of flowering plant in the family Fabaceae and the sole species in the genus Spartium.
