Solanum tuberosum, or the common potato, is a starchy, perennial, tuber-producing plant in the nightshade family (Solanaceae) native to the Andes of South America, domesticated 7,000–10,000 years ago. While thousands of cultivated varieties exist, wild potato species (over 150 species in section Petota) are found from the southern US to southern Chile, offering vital genetic diversity for disease resistance.
