Item #32653 L'Acoli (Goshawk). Francois Le vaillant.

L'Acoli (Goshawk)

1799-1808. Plate from Francois Le Vaillant's "Histoire Naturelle Des Oiseaux D'Afrique", published in six volumes 1799 – 1808. Probably the most important ornithological work on Africa for the period, containing 300 plates in total. François Levaillant was a French writer, explorer, naturalist, zoological collector, travel writer, and noted ornithologist. He described many new species of birds from specimans collected, many which are now named after him. He was opposed to the use of binomial nomenclature introduced by Carl Linnaeus, preferring to use descriptive French names instead. The Artist for this print was Johann Lebrecht Reinold and engraved by Claude Fessard. Plate is most likely of the Goshawk. A few light scattered spots of foxing. Please examine photo for condition 310 by 230mm (12¼ by 9 inches). Item #32653
