Le Bubale (the bubal hartebeest or northern hartebeest, Alcelaphus buselaphus)
ca.1780. Plate from Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon's "Histoire Naturelle", circa 1780. Buffon was a French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist. Buffon published thirty-six quarto volumes of his "Histoire Naturelle" during his lifetime, with additional volumes based on his notes and further research being published in the two decades following his death. The bubal hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus buselaphus), or northern hartebeest, was a subspecies of hartebeest formerly found across North Africa and the Sahel until its extinction in the early 20th century. Known for its sandy brown coat, U-shaped horns, and social nature, the last known specimen died in Paris in 1923. Plate size 210 x 170mm, closely trimmed on the right 280 by 190mm (11 by 7½ inches).
