Le Nilgaut Male - nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus)
ca.1780. Plate from Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon's "Histoire Naturelle", circa 1780. Buffon was a French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist. Buffon published thirty-six quarto volumes of his "Histoire Naturelle" during his lifetime, with additional volumes based on his notes and further research being published in the two decades following his death. The nilgai is the largest antelope of Asia, and is ubiquitous across the northern Indian subcontinent. It is the sole member of the genus Boselaphus, which was first scientifically described by Peter Simon Pallas in 1766. Plate size 205 x 165mm 260 by 220mm (10¼ by 8¾ inches). Item #32660
