Le Serval - serval (Leptailurus serval)

ca.1780. Plate from Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon's "Histoire Naturelle", circa 1780. Buffon was a French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist. Buffon published thirty-six quarto volumes of his "Histoire Naturelle" during his lifetime, with additional volumes based on his notes and further research being published in the two decades following his death. The serval is a wild small cat native to Africa. It is widespread in sub-Saharan countries, where it inhabits grasslands, wetlands, moorlands and bamboo thickets. Across its range, it occurs in protected areas, and hunting it is either prohibited or regulated in range countries. Plate size 205 x 165mm 260 by 220mm (10¼ by 8¾ inches). Item #32661
