Le Bontebok - The bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus)

ca.1780. Plate from Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon's "Histoire Naturelle", circa 1780. Buffon was a French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist. Buffon published thirty-six quarto volumes of his "Histoire Naturelle" during his lifetime, with additional volumes based on his notes and further research being published in the two decades following his death. The bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus) is an antelope found in South Africa, Lesotho and Namibia. D. pygargus has two subspecies; the nominate subspecies, occurring naturally in the Fynbos and Renosterveld areas of the Western Cape, and the blesbok occurring in the Highveld.
