1755. Print from Vol IV of Abbé Prévost's Histoire Générale des Voyages (General History of Voyages). Copperplate engraving on hand-laid paper. Anatomical and external views of the Torpedo Ray (Electric Ray), referred to in French as La Torpille. At the time, the "electric" properties of the Torpedo ray were a major point of scientific curiosity. The print shows the internal anatomy (female ovaries and intestines) as well as the dorsal (back) and ventral (belly) views of both male and female specimens. 250 by 190mm (9¾ by 7½ inches).
