Monoemugi
Amsterdam: Johannes Allart, c.1802. Print is from 'De mensch, zoo als hij voorkomt op den bekenden aardbol beschreven door Martinus Suart, afgebeeld door Jacques Kuyper.', published in 6 parts by Johannes Allart in Amsterdam, 1802. Stipple engraving with original hand-colouring Monoemugi (also spelled Monoe-Mugi, Monoemuge, or Nimeamaye) was a largely mythical or poorly understood inland kingdom depicted on 17th and 18th-century European maps of Africa, usually located north of Monomotapa and west of Zanzibar. It was often portrayed as a vast, wealthy, and powerful region, sometimes associated with the Great Lakes of Africa and the source of the Nile. Maps generally placed it in the interior of East/Central Africa, often bordering the Congo and Monomotapa (Zimbabwe) regions. 135 by 90mm (5¼ by 3½ inches). Item #32877
