Samuel Smith, 1682. Folio, complete with 8 plates (7 folding), folding genealogical table, and plate of Ethiopic alphabet, containing 4 books; I. An account of the nature, quality and condition of the country II. Their political government III. Their Ecclesiastical Affairs; their Conversion to the Christian Religion IV. Their Private Oeconomy Pagination erratic in places, but seems consistent with other known copies, Book I ending on p88, Book II starting p 151; P154-155 (shown as 104-105); Book III ending p370, Book IV starting p375 and erratic pagination between 376-382 "A New History of Ethiopia, published by German scholar Hiob Ludolf in 1682/1684, is a foundational text in Ethiopian studies. It provides a detailed account of 17th-century Abyssinian geography, politics, religion, and culture, often correcting earlier, erroneous European views." Contemporary calf, showing wear and repairs, hinges starting. Ink stains in places, paper repairs on title page, several plates (some with minor loss and repairs on margins), writing on the margin of p213, top cnr of p381 - 398 missing (generally not affecting text exccept for p398 affecting a few letters. p387 4cm x 8cm piece removed from bottom margin (not affecting text).
