N.898 Protea lepidocarpodendrum
1787. Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was an apothecary (directing a famous pharmacy in Regensburg) and botanist. Phytanthoza Iconographia was his masterpiece, consisting of eight folio volumes, one of the most comprehensive botanical references for the eighteenth century. Described as a "pioneering work of botanical prints" and it remains today one of the most ambitious works ever undertaken, displaying over 4,000 species. This print from a 1787 edition of Johann Weinmann's "Phytanthoza Iconographia". Printed from the same plates as the 1737-1745 edition, using mezzotints and additional hand coloring. Each print is on chain-lined, hand-made paper, watermarked & in color. The colors are very fresh and vibrant, with full, generous margins and vibrant coloring. This print illustrated by Bartholomäus Seuter (1678-1754), indicated by the S. at the bottom right of the image. 430 by 260mm (17 by 10¼ inches). Item #33029
