The Gentleman from Indiana - 2 Books - One Inscribed
New York: Doubleday & McClure Company, 1899. Hardcover. Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 384 pages; Signed by Author. Very Good. Two first edition copies, one of them signed and inscribed. The first copy is 1st edition, 1st issue with a first state binding. It has both mistakes on page 245, with line 12 ending in "eye" and line 16 reading "so pretty". Pictorial cloth boards with top stain. Ear of the corn pointing up as per first state binding. Book is about VG with owner name and stamp in the front dated November 1899. The 2nd copy Is a first edition, 3rd state with both mistakes on page 245 corrected. Also with 2nd state binding with ear of the corn pointing down. Signed and with a wonderful inscription by Booth Tarkington, in which he quotes from Lewis Carroll's; "The Walrus and the carpenter", which is also the title of chapter IV of the novel. Inscription dated Febr 21st 1900. 2nd copy maybe Good+, shows some loses to the spine. Inside front hinge showing some separation with the front free endpaper lose (containing inscription). A great set showing the issue points for the first edition with a wonderful inscription by Tarkington. VG. Item #5
