London: Methuen, 1894. Hardcover. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; Signed by Author. Very Good. A rare collection of short stories by Julian Osgood Field writing under the pseudonym. The title story "Aut Diabolus Aut Nihil" about a group of devil worshippers evoking a young man, "The Kiss of Judas" deals with the decendents of Judas. Bleiler 1747 - "Short stories told in the decorated style of the 1890's. Imaginative, original....". Osgood was an american sociolite and writer, educated in England and lived largely in London and Paris and became an intimate of the future King Edward VII. Field was a crook, moneylender's tout and pursued by many creditors. Inscribed to H Beerbohm on the half title, dated 1899. Quite possibly the english actor and theatre manager Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree VG copy, toning on endpapers, cocked spine, rubbing on edges and some bend corners. Ex Libris on front endpaper. Some small and large chips on page edges due to crudely opening of pages. Ink stain visible on top edge of several pages in back. 32 pages of advertisements in the back dated October 1894.
